Your child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday. This allows us to give you helpful information as your baby develops a daily routine including brushing, flossing, and a healthy diet. At your first visit, we will complete a knee-to-knee exam, dental cleaning, and fluoride varnish application. We spend time going over daily routine and diet to make sure we’re off to a great start! We’ll also cover emergency/trauma management, in case your little one takes a tumble. Common questions include:

– What age is safe for my child to use a fluoride toothpaste?

– When should I start flossing?

– Does my child have soft teeth, deep grooves, or other things that may cause cavities to develop early on?

– What do I do if my child falls? Do I go to the pediatrician or to the pediatric dentist?

– What about pacifier/thumbsucking? what do I do?

Haven’t brought your child in yet? No Problem! Our focus is on making your child’s first, or repeat dental visit a positive experience. Some kids at this age may already be anxious or fearful- no worries! Addressing fear or anxiety in children is our specialty. Services include exams, cleanings, and fluoride varnishes, as well as fillings (in chair/under nitrous oxide/under general anesthesia) and preventive sealants to stop cavities on the molars- remember, they are going to stick around until age 11-13! We teach brushing and flossing in a way that is easy for a young child to understand, so they can keep those teeth nice and clean. We continue to discuss diet, snacking and beverage habits. Common questions include:

– Does my baby have soft teeth?

– The baby teeth are crooked- do they need braces?

– What are sealants? why are they needed?

– My child is scared of the dentist- what can I do?

– How can we fix cavities on top of the teeth? Between the teeth?

– They’re just baby teeth- they’re going to fall out soon, right?

Your child is growing so fast! Along with all the other preventive and restorative services, we focus on your childs growth and development. For kids in this age range, we place sealants on permanent molars that will be with them for the rest of their lives, and address issues related to how the teeth fit together, if they permanent teeth are normal or abnormal, and talk to parents about braces/orthodontics. As kids become more active, trauma management for permanent teeth (as opposed to baby teeth) is important because it could leave a lasting impression for the rest of their life. Common questions from parents include:

– Does my child need braces? When do they need them?

– My child has cracked his permanent front tooth- what do we do?

– Do I need to pull this baby tooth, or let it fall out?

– Why are the new teeth behind the baby teeth? Is something wrong?

– What are these brown and orange spots on these teeth?

– When can I get my child’s teeth whitened?
